History of Hip-Hop (GNED 1082)
Hip-hop hustled its way out of the Bronx in the late 1970s, as the voice of black and Latino youth. Focusing on the four basic elements of hip-hop (MCing, DJing, breaking, and graffiti art), students trace the origins and evolution of hip-hop culture in both the US and Canada, and explore its role in sociopolitical change. Sociological themes such as race, gender, and class frame the study of iconic artists, powerful producers, and legendary record labels.
