Kitchen Design (KBDE 1000)

Students develop an understanding of the functional and spatial qualities of kitchen design. The design and decision making processes relevant to the planning of kitchens are explored and applied. Students learn to renovate and design existing residential kitchens in accordance with specific criteria, regulatory codes, barrier free requirements, and principles of universal design. Students acquire the skills to define the scope of a residential kitchen project, site measure an existing kitchen, and design a functional and code-compliant kitchen space. The elements and principles of design, design philosophies, and current aesthetic qualities relevant to kitchen design are explored, along with the sourcing and specification of fixtures, fittings and cabinetry.
