Mediation and Dispute Resolution (POLC 4014)

This course builds on the Foundations of Interviewing course with a focus on the role a mediator plays in assisting to resolve conflict in various community and judicial settings via mediation and dispute resolution. Students examine the literature on dispute resolution, and contemporary dispute resolution methods (including litigation, mediation, and conciliation, arbitration, and hybrid processes) and critically assess the strengths and shortcomings of each. Particular attention is given to the proactive role of mediation and dispute resolution with a focus on ethical decision making, best practices, and professional expectations.
