Principles of a Helping Relationship (SSWK 1003)
Using the counselling labs, students will explore the qualities embedded in an effective professional helping relationship. Using a problem management and opportunity for development-based model of counselling, students will view the helping relationship as a planned, purposeful process, and will examine the use of self including verbal and non-verbal communication skills in the problem-solving relationship. Emphasis will be placed on the values forming the basis of supportive counselling: respect, genuineness, empathy and empowerment.
